SECTION TWO: PATRIARCHY

Judaism

Jewish women are actively trying to reclaim their religious roots, attempting to reshape Jewish memory and history so that the female and the feminine will be included in the liturgies, blessings, and midrash (storytelling). In addition, there are several different versions of a feminist Haggadah in circulation, and a large number of “moon groups”: women who celebrate the new-moon holiday Rosh Hodesh, as a female ritual. Good resources are:

Buddhism:

There’s a wealth of material available today concerning women and Buddhism. The introduction to Tsultrim Allione’s Women of Wisdom, Routledge 8c Kegan Paul, 1982, provides a brilliant, comprehensive analysis of the feminine in Buddhist practice which is followed by biographical sketches of female Tibetan practitioners. Sandy Boucher, Turning the Wheel: American Women Creating the New Buddhism, Harper 8c Row, 1988, gives a very personal account of many of the women—students as well as teachers—involved in Buddhism in the 1970s and 1980s. She also includes a responsible treatment on the fraught subject of male teachers’ sexual involvement with their students. Other books well worth dipping into include:

SPIRITUAL PRACTICE IN DAILY LIFE

Rituals

Numerous books on rituals are in print. To find one that suits you, go to a woman’s bookstore, scan the titles of the “recipe” books to see which one “shines” at you or draws your attention in some way, then flip through it. If you stand there reading for some time, you’ve found the right book.

Diane Mariechild has a number of other books out, as does Z. Budapest. Budapest’s include Grandmother Moon: Lunar Magic in Our Lives, HarperCollins, 1991, and The Grandmother of Time, HarperCollins, 1989.

Other good ones are:

Sedona Cahill and Josh Helpern, The Ceremonial Circle: Practice, Ritual and Renewal for Personal and Community Healing, HarperCollins,

1990.
